Announcing the System Crafters Forum!

Today I’m excited to announce the launch of the new System Crafters Forum!

For years now, our community has lacked a good middle ground between the main System Crafters website and the various chat channels we’ve used (Discord, Matrix, IRC) to offer a more reliable environment for asking questions, finding answers, and sharing the cool things we’ve made.

I recently started looking into Discourse as an option and was very impressed with the capabilities that they provide. I feel confident that our new forum be the ideal home for many of the community activities that I’m planning in the near future like hackathons, mini-conferences, courses, mentoring groups, and more!

With the introduction of the forum, the IRC chat will become more of a lounge for the community where people can hang out and discuss topics of interest in a more ephemeral way. Any time a question in the chat is more deep than just a one-line answer, it should probably move to the forum so that others can find the answer in the future!

To start things off, I’ve added categories for relevant topics like Emacs, Guix, and Programming, but there’s probably a lot more we’d like to discuss. Please create a post and suggest other categories we should add!

If you’re interested to participate, head to the forum site, browse around, and then sign up for an account. We look forward to seeing you there!

Changes to the System Crafters Matrix Channels

Hey Crafters!

Since last week’s announcement, we’ve had a lot of activity in the System Crafters Matrix and IRC rooms! It’s been great to see so many familiar faces joining up.

Over the last few days, I’ve been working hard to improve the overall experience on Matrix so that we can bridge IRC channels with full chat history for new people who join and so that folks in IRC can easily see and mention Matrix users.

After a lot of trial and error, I’ve finally figured out the right configuration! The bad news is that people who already joined the SC Matrix channels will have to follow a couple of steps to join the new, better channels. New users who join today will not be affected!

¶How to Join the New Channels

If you’re already joined to the Matrix channels, here’s how you can fix your setup:

¶1. In Matrix, leave both the #systemcrafters and “Emacs - System Crafters” channels

Unfortunately it’s necessary to leave these channels first otherwise your IRC presence will be tied to the old, deprecated room instead of the new room. It will cause Matrix users in the new rooms to see you as an IRC user instead of a matrix user!

¶2. Join the new channels

Here are the new channels to join, you can either take a look at the System Crafters Space to join them (I have removed the old channels) or use these channel names to join directly:

#systemcrafters-general:matrix.org

#systemcrafters-emacs:matrix.org

Joining these two channels will put you in the right place, and you’ll also get all of the channel history before you joined!

¶3. Tell
appservice
to reconnect your IRC connection

When you originally joined the #systemcrafters channel, an instant message with an account named
appservice
showed up for you in Matrix. Open that conversation and type in the following line as a message in the chat:

!reconnect

This will cause your IRC persona to reconnect, hopefully putting you in the right state to be seen to IRC users.

If these steps didn’t fix everything for you, please let me or one of the mods know in the Matrix chat! There may be other steps that some users need to follow. If all else fails, we may have to kick you from the old channel so that you can rejoin!

Community Chat is Moving From Discord to Matrix and IRC

Hey Crafters!

In 2020, I started making live streams teaching people how to configure Emacs from the ground up using community packages. After the streams started gaining some interest, I decided to create a Discord so that viewers could gather and discuss their Emacs configurations, ask questions, and just hang out.

At the time, Discord seemed to be the best option for creating a community chat because many people already used it and the user experience was pretty good. However, as time went on I started to regret choosing Discord for a number of reasons:

You can’t use unofficial clients or bridges without violating the Terms of Service, meaning that you can’t exercise your freedom in how you connect to the chat

The desktop client is quite a drain on resources thanks to the technologies it uses

The desktop client is not Free Software, so you can’t modify it to suit your needs

The Discord service as a whole is constantly nagging you to buy Nitro, plus whatever else they’re trying to sell

For these reasons (and probably more that I’m forgetting), I started thinking about how and when I’d move the System Crafters chat to a more appropriate home. Over time I’ve considered IRC, XMPP, Matrix, RocketChat, Zulip, and more but I struggled to make a decision on which one I thought would be a sufficient replacement.

¶Our new home on Matrix and IRC

Recently, I finally came to the conclusion that the best option is to use both Matrix and IRC to give you all the best experience and range of choice in clients and ways to join!

Matrix provides an experience that should be pretty familiar to Discord users. It also has really nice desktop and mobile apps which have chat history, emoji reactions, link embeds, and more. It’s also Free Software and an open protocol with lots of alternative clients (including Ement.el for Emacs!)

IRC is the classic chat protocol that people have used over 30 years, especially in Free Software communities. Emacs comes with two IRC clients built in, ERC and rcirc. It’s a simpler protocol and it doesn’t have some of the modern comforts you would expect (like chat history, reactions, and more) but the flexibility of how you can connect to it is unbeatable.

The nice thing for us that there is a bridge between Matrix and Libera.Chat, so you can join the same chatroom from both of these protocols! It doesn’t matter which one you choose, you will see all of us there.

I’ve included more details about how to join these channels along with client recommendations on the Community page:

https://systemcrafters.net/community/#chat-with-us

I hope you’ll join us there soon! It’s really easy to participate from within the comfort of Emacs :)

¶Why not leave the Discord running?

Instead of having there be confusion about why the community is split across multiple chat services, I’ve decided that the Discord should be deactivated as part of this transition.

Frankly, I’ve felt guilty over the last year for not being an active part of the community there, and since I don’t really intend to use Discord even for personal use, I think it’s best that I close it down so that it doesn’t eventually turn into a place I wouldn’t be proud of.

The System Crafters Discord will be disabled on July 1, 2023. The Discord itself will not be deleted, but all channels will be made read-only, pointing users to the new home on Matrix and IRC.

I know this change might come as a surprise to some since I haven’t mentioned it on the Discord until now. I apologize for that! I regret my extended absense on that platform, but I believe that making this change will be better for all of us.

Unveiling the New System Crafters Site!

Welcome to the redesigned and improved System Crafters site!

Over the past couple of years, this site has been relatively bare-bones with a simple layout and not much information other than the listings of my YouTube videos and their show notes. Today, that changes!

The new iteration of this site is meant to be the center of the System Crafters universe. If you want to know about new video releases, scheduled live streams and other announcements, just come to systemcrafters.net!

Going forward, one major improvement will be the addition of comprehensive written guides about the topics we discuss on the System Crafters channel like GNU Emacs, GNU Guix, and related tools. These guides are currently in development, so make sure you subscribe to the Newsletter to be notified as they are released and updated.

¶What Changed?

On the surface the site may not look very different, so here’s a list of the important changes:

All content is now organized under the Guides section to prepare for the future written guides

All video and live stream pages now have an embedded YouTube player so that you can watch directly in the page

A News page has been added with an associated RSS feed

I’ve redesigned the How to Help page to describe more ways to get involved

A Community section has been added to highlight community members and projects

Live stream show notes pages automatically appear on the Live Streams page so you can always find the latest stream!

The site’s home page now does a better job of pointing you to the learning resources you might be interested in

The overall design has been updated to use the System Crafters logo and color theme

I’m really proud of the new site and I hope you like it! Feel free to send any feedback or issue reports to
david
at
systemcrafters.net
or file an issue on the Codeberg repository.
